Why go to Tokaj?
Tokaj is a must go! This lovely quiet little town, worldwide famous for its wine, is the perfect destination for a day trip from Budapest.
There you will enjoy Hungary countryside landscapes, typical buildings and best known wine cellar. Most of the cellars were built in the 16th-17th centuries. Thanks to the specific volcanic soil and weather, Tokaj wines are really specials and a symbol of European history. To learn more about the specifies of this typical Hungarian local wine you should definitively go for wine tasting in one of the famous wine cellar.
What to do in Tokaj?
Sightseeing
First, you should go for a walk inside this beautiful little town. Enjoy the nice buildings, church and landscape surrounding.
After you MUST go to visit a wine cellar and do some wine tasting. We highly recommend you to go to Himesudvar familial wine cellar. Really well located in the city center, the place is nice and you can taste 6 different Tokaj wine for only 990 Ft. The lady is welcoming, explaining the history and answering your questions. You can also visit the cellar. The wine is excellent. On top of that you can buy a bottle to bring back home as well as nice homemade jam, honey or lemonade. You will love it for sure!
If the weather is nice and you are feeling like hiking, we really recommend you to take Dosza Gyorgy street, follow the path next to the cemetery and hike on top of the hill (around 1 hour to reach the top of the hill). From there you will have a really really nice view over the town and surrounding. Enjoy!
Food
To eat we recommend you Bonchidai Csarda restaurant. This restaurant is very well located, you can enjoy a nice fresh fish dish overlooking the Tisza Rive. They also have nice appetizer and meat. Prices are around 2000-3500 Ft.
Accommodation
Tiszavirag Camping : this camping is really well located in Tokaj, next to the river, you can enjoy the landscape. The camping is offering really simple and clean room for only 6€/person, it is worthy for a night!
How to go to Tokaj?
You can go to Tokaj by train from Budapest Keleti station. The trip is really easy and take around 2 hours and a half: please find information and timetable here.
